Communication Programme Officer

This position is located in the Global Services Division, Office of Information and Communications Technology, Department of Management (DM/OICT/GSD) in New York. The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) provides enterprise-wide oversight of ICT programmes, budgets and decision-making to ensure alignment with the Secretariat's overall ICT strategy in support of the Organization's mission.

Within delegated authority, the Communication Programme Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Ensure implementation of activities related to communication strategy to publicize strategic OICT activities effectively and in an innovative way, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up actions, and analyzing the outcomes. Monitor and analyse current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, advises management on appropriate action/responses and initiates pro-active outreach efforts.

• Produce or oversee production of a specific types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products (e.g. social media, feature articles, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, etc.). Recommend appropriate information and communication materials and other communication activities. Ensure effective design and delivery of communication products. Propose topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution. Prepare, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles for inclusion in newsletters, intranet, social media, etc. Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the target audiences.

• Plan and coordinate outreach events and ensure promotion and marketing of these events.

• Act as communications focal point on specific issues, including: monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc. and; initiating and sustaining professional relationships with ICT entities and partners.

• Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, public relations or related field.
• A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Required

• A minimum of five years of progressive work experience in a digital newsroom, editorial production or journalism, some of which at the international level, particularly in the area of information technology and innovation is required.

Desirable

• Experience in the execution of a communication strategy entailing story innovation is desirable.
