UNOPS Myanmar

Myanmar is one of UNOPS leading offices in Asia, acting as fund manager for three of the largest development programmes in the country, namely the Three Millennium Development Goal Fund (3MDG), the Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) and the Joint Peace Fund (JPF). In addition, UNOPS Myanmar is Principal Recipient for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Myanmar and Cambodia, and for the Global Fund’s Regional Artemisinin-resistance Initiative targeting drug resistant malaria in the Greater Mekong sub-region. UNOPS provides procurement, infrastructure and project management services to a wide range of organizations in the country, including the Government of Myanmar, international development partners, other UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs. UNOPS Myanmar plays a critical role in ensuring that the quality of services provided to its partners meets stringent requirements of speed, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT)

The Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) is a multi-donor fund established in Myanmar in 2009 with the purpose of increasing the livelihoods' resilience and nutrition of poor people in Myanmar by focusing on interventions that increase income, food availability, utilization and stability of access to food. LIFT has received funding from 14 donors to date. As the Fund Manager, UNOPS administers the funds and provides monitoring and oversight.

LIFT is performing very well. At the end of 2016, LIFT was providing assistance to over 5 million people in Myanmar, nearly 15% of the rural population. All of these people have access to LIFT-supported financial services. The Fund has helped 500,000 households (2.1 million people) measurably improve their food security (measured in terms of one month’s additional food availability), and has contributed to a reduction in the stunting rates of children under five years from 32% in 2013 to 29% in 2015.

The Knowledge Development Analyst (Intern) will work with the Knowledge Management, Monitoring and Evaluation and Communications teams. Knowledge Management comes under the supervision of the Head of Communications and Partnerships.

1. Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Knowledge Management Analyst, the Knowledge Development Analyst (Intern) shall perform these duties:

• Conduct research as requested contributing towards the development of the Fund’s Knowledge Management Strategy.
• Be able to research and analyse data related to LIFT's projects and key themes and write clear and high quality thought pieces for dissemination
• Support the planning and management of the LIFT annual forum 
• Assist in the gathering of information from the programme teams and M&E to feed into the Knowledge Management Strategy. 
• Assist in the development of learning products in line with the Knowledge Management strategy and LIFT’s key thematic focus areas.
• Assist with drafting a range of materials for internal and external partners, e.g. donors, implementing partners and beneficiaries.   This involves research and creative presentation of facts and figures.
• Assist with organising internal and external events, such as publication launches.  Participate at meetings and events, as required. 
• Keep track of LIFT's knowledge products and different maintain relevant inventories and databases
• Perform other duties as required by LIFT’s Knowledge Management Unit. 
• Assist the Communications team by contributing to the Fund’s social media platforms with regular high quality content, slideshows, even video.  Identify and develop new audiences, for example through campaigns and strategic alliances ensuring clear and vibrant communications.

The intern is responsible to abide by security policies, administrative instructions, plans and procedures of the UN Security Management System and that of UNOPS.

2. Training components and participation in missions

UNOPS highly values interns’ contributions and realizes the importance of learning during an internship. UNOPS thus provides a wealth of opportunities for on-the-job training, studying project-related documents, data analysis and preparation of reports and statistics. UNOPS encourages the intern to raise specific wishes regarding learning opportunities before and during the internship. 

The intern will be required to take Basic and Advanced Security in the Field courses before arrival and the Department of Safety and Security briefing immediately after arrival. S/he will take the online UN and UNOPS induction courses on arrival. The intern will participate in the UNOPS Myanmar Induction Training that comprehensively covers all aspects of UNOPS work in Myanmar. S/he will have access to a large offering of online training on the comprehensive UNOPS intranet and opportunities to communicate with UNOPS HQ, Regional Office, and other country offices.

The duties will be mainly Yangon-based. A mission outside Yangon to gather stories from beneficiaries and implementing partners is possible.

Where possible training opportunities will be identified and made available to the intern. 

3. Terms and Conditions

The intern is responsible for all costs associated with the internship (e.g. travel, accommodation, health insurance).

UNOPS Myanmar will provide the intern with the following:
• Workspace in a shared office including computer, stationery, land line telephone
• Use of common office facilities, as for all UNOPS staff
• A small stipend for those not receiving any funding from other institutions
• A small stipend towards the cost of travel to the duty station
• If mission travel is undertaken, Daily Subsistence Allowance, in accordance with UN policy
• Assistance with application for work visa

The internship comes with no expectations of future employment with UNOPS as a direct result of the internship.

1. Academic qualifications
Either currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD course in a relevant field (e.g.  communications including graphics and audio-visual, international relations, international development, public policy, economics, etc.), or have graduated within the past 3 years is required. 

2. Language Skills
Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second language is an asset.

3. Computer Literacy
Mastery of Microsoft Office 2010 is essential 
Skills in Photoshop and InDesign are highly desirable
A video editing programme such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro and web content programmes would be an asset.

4. Work experience
1 year experience in communications, international relations, international development, public policy , economics or related work would be desirable.
