Diesel Generator Engineer

Based in Geneva, the Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECR) supports UNOPS offices throughout the region through: management, financial and programmatic oversight of global and country-specific portfolios, clusters and operations centres, including hosting services; fund and management advisory services; project implementation; procuring goods and services; and managing human resources.

ECR ensures that projects are executed to the highest standards, providing a shared knowledge base and ensuring that best practices and lessons learned are disseminated between business units and projects across the entire region.

ECR operates global portfolios from offices in Geneva, Brussels and New York, and country-specific programmes from its operations and project centres located in Eastern Europe and Central Asian countries.

The purpose of the REACT project is to promote the mainstreaming of environmental sustainability in the UN system, focusing in particular on peacekeeping operations, by supporting the United Nations Department of Field Support (DFS) in their efforts to improve their own environmental and energy performance. Peacekeeping operations are international missions mandated by the UN Security Council to operate in specific countries and parts of countries for specific periods. The operations usually take place in locations with a fragile environment and a serious lack of infrastructure. The environmental footprint of UN Peacekeeping Operations is not benchmarked against any specific standard or other organization but it is considered to have significant room for improvement in a large number of critical areas. UN Peace operations represents over 50% of the current UN system Climate Footprint and as such are instrumental in reaching the UN wide target of Climate Neutrality by 2020 that is demanded by the Secretary General and the UN Chief Executives’ Board.

UNEP will act in the role of an in-house technical assistance (TA) team and will provide expertise to support DFS in planning, designing, financing and implementing a range of actions that will cumulatively result in a substantial reduction in the environmental footprint. Within DFS, a primary partner of UNEP will the Global Support Centre based in Brindisi, Italy. The GSC provides a wide range of engineering, logistical and IT support to missions.

Within delegated authority, the Diesel Generator Engineer will apply technical engineering knowledge and expertise in performance of the following duties: 

• Carry out surveys and assessment of existing diesel generators fleet
• Lead market research of diesel generators including synchronization kits, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller) and control systems (DSE Deep See Electronics)
• Plan and execute service, maintenance and repair work on multiple models of diesel generators
• Utilize the proper testing equipment for effective repair, testing and maintenance
• Coordinate Field Service Technicians and hand workers in maintenance and installation of generators equipment
• Troubleshoot equipment and service generator components including alternators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown switches, mechanical components
• Determine corrective action through inspection of failed parts
• Perform assembly, diagnosis, and engine systems operating performance tests
• Support in diesel generator size selection and hybrid system design
• Take part on diesel generators vendors and O&M bidding process
• Give technical input for best product selection and supply chain set up
• Service, fault find and carry out breakdown repairs
• Comply with the UN Electric Health & Safety Policy, including carrying out general housekeeping to ensure work areas are tidy.
• Comply with all aspect of the UN Electric, included but not limited to ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001: 2004 and other relevant environmental procedures.

Results Expected

Provide technical leadership on diesel generators within the engineering team. Assess and troubleshoot diesel generators field issues including but not limited to: thermal block, electric alternators and control panel. Deliver field support and technical assistance to customers. Lead the electrical and mechanical engineering scope of project implementation and commissioning phases.
