Programme Specialist, Multiple positions

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Governance Affairs Office provides secretariat support to the UN Environment Assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UN Environment) and its subsidiary body, the Committee of Permanent Representatives. It serves as the main interface for external relations and facilitates deliberations of Governments, Major Groups and other Stakeholders including the private sector. The Private Sector Unit coordinates private sector engagement across the organization. The Unit undertakes risk assessments of private sector partnerships and contributes to increased transparency in engaging stakeholders.

The Consultant will undertake the following tasks:

A. Support private sector engagement at the corporate level:

• Support the partnership process with private sector partners using UN Environment’s online Partners’ Portal, including validation, risk and strategy assessments
• Conduct training workshops on the use of the Partners’ Portal, webinars and make presentations on other assigned activities
• Assist in the development of toolkits and guidelines for private sector engagement in UN Environment
• Support the preparations of various written outputs, such as background papers; briefing notes and publications on private sector engagement

• Assist in reaching out to member states to identify and invite private sector companies from their countries to the UN Environment Assembly and other international fora
• Support the organization of private sector related events such as the 2019 Sustainable Innovation Expo and Leaders’ Luncheon
• Support the registration process for private sector representatives during the UN Environment Assembly
• Perform other duties as required.

Result 1: Effective and timely partnership process with private sector entities

Result 2: Development of private sector guidelines, toolkits, presentations

Result 3: Successful private sector events during the fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly.

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in in International Relations or Environmental Studies or a related field is required.
• A first-level university degree in combination with additional four of relevant and qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

• Two years experience working with a Government institution, international organization and/or private sector. Experience in UN partnership processes with the private sector is required.
• Skills in working with national governments, private sector experience and international organisations experience are highly essential.

• Fluency in English is essential.

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the East Africa Hub manages a growing portfolio of engagements, including associated strategic and operational risks. The East Africa sub-region currently consists of an established Operation Centre in South Sudan and a portfolio of engagements managed by the Kenya based East Africa Hub office. This includes primarily transactional projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple ‘operational’ projects in Somalia, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and several island states.
