Graphic Designer, Multiple positions

The UN General Assembly adopted the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction in December 1999 and established the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the secretariat to ensure its implementation. Its mandate was expanded in 2001 to serve as the focal point in the United Nations system to ensure coordination and synergies among disaster risk reduction activities of the United Nations system and regional organizations and activities in socio-economic and humanitarian fields (UN General Assembly resolution 56/195). As the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR supports the implementation, follow-up and review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework), which was adopted by the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on 18 March 2015 in Sendai, Japan. The Sendai Framework is a 15-year voluntary, non-binding agreement that maps out a broad, people-centered approach to disaster risk reduction, succeeding the Hyogo Framework for Action that was in force from 2005 to 2015. 

In adopting the Sendai Framework, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda), the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and the Paris Agreement, Member States clearly identified the prevention of new risk, the reduction of existing risk, and the strengthening of resilience, as central to global efforts in realizing sustainable development pathways in the 21st century.

Reporting to the Head of Campaigns and Community the Graphic Designer will work on design projects for UNDRR to improve visibility for UNDRR through high-quality products that graphically represent our mandate and work.

The Graphic Designer  will be expected to work with UNDRR Communication team to create a design for UNDRR documents taking into account UNDRR’s corporate design style guide.

Responsibilities

The Graphic Designer will be responsible for developing, designing and executing a variety of graphics projects.

• Design and Layout a wide array of print and digital assets, including one-sheets, brochures, report, booklets, social media graphics, event materials bases on the brand guidelines of UNDRR

• Design and Layout periodical reports, such as UNDRR work plan, Lessons on Covid19, UNDRR Targets

• Perform corrections and changes to graphic documents

• Ensure stylistic consistency and uphold UNDRR corporate visual identity guidelines

• Suggest and create innovative ideas for print, web and interactive presentations

• Produce up to three simple social cards for each report if requested

• Create and edit animation products.

The estimated volume of working days is 120 per year, per retainer.

• A high-school diploma is required. 

• A professional/technical diploma/certification in visual or graphic design, or Audio-Visual Arts (with 4 years of experience) or

• A Bachelor’s (with 2 years of experience) or Master's degree in graphic design, fine arts, visual communications or related areas, may be accepted in lieu of some or all of the required years of experience.

• A minimum of 6 years in combination with a high-school diploma of substantive experience in producing graphics for print and online distribution using inDesign or related areas  is required. 

• Experience of working with the UN system is desirable

• Fluency in English is required.
