Champions of the Earth Coordinator

United Nations Environment is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Champions of the Earth is the United Nations highest environmental accolade. The annual award recognizes outstanding figures from the public and private sectors and from civil society whose actions have had a significant positive impact on the environment.

Result of Service:

1. To implement UN Environment’s annual Champions of the Earth award, and expand it with the goal of raising its prestige and global awareness as well as introducing an extensive new youth component.
2. Expand the Communication Division’s donor partnerships with the private sector.

Reporting to the Communication Division’s Deputy Director, the consultant will carry out the following tasks:

1. Launch a new youth component of Champions of the Earth

• Working with a range of colleagues from across the Communication Division, coordinate the development and launch of this initiative. Background about this initiative: While the existing Champions of the Earth award is recognition of amazing environmental work done in the past, Young Champions would focus on the future. A Young Champion would be an individual or group who we recognize as having outstanding potential to create positive environmental impact. The goal is for the Young Champions initiative to inspire action, encourage innovation and push the boundaries of what is possible. It will do this by showcasing the possibility and impact of amazing young individuals and groups, as well as nurturing ideas and scaling projects, and documenting Young Champions’ journeys as they do it. 

2. Coordinate implementation of the annual Champions of the Earth award

• Working with colleagues, develop and implement a strategy to revamp the award to raise its global prestige and awareness with the goal of it becoming the preeminent international prize focused on the environment.
• Coordinate outreach to potential donors to raise funding for implementation of the award.

3. Fundraising

• Forge new donor partnerships with the private sector with the goal of raising funds for advocacy campaigns and other communication activities.

• A Bachelor’s Degree in in communication or related field required

• At least  seven years experience in communication, marketing or a related field with a strong preference for candidates who have worked with youth and/or start-up initiatives.

• Fluency in English is required.

Background Information - East Africa Hub (EAH)

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the East Africa Hub manages a growing portfolio of engagements, including associated strategic and operational risks. The East Africa sub-region currently consists of an established Operation Centre in South Sudan and a portfolio of engagements managed by the Kenya based East Africa Hub office. This includes primarily transactional projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies, UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple ‘operational’ projects in Somalia, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and several island states.
