Web Developer

UN-Water is the United Nations inter-agency collaboration mechanism on all freshwater related issues including sanitation. UN-Water is comprised of 31 Members from the United Nations system and 39 international Partners. Through UN-Water the United Nations act as "One UN" on water related issues. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is the legal and administrative host of the UN-Water Inter-Agency Trust Fund.

UN-Water’s needs for editorial services relate to its corporate and campaign communications and the specific websites and their digital environments (such as archives): www.unwater.org; www.worldwaterday.org; www.worldtoiletday.org; www.wateractiondecade.org

uccessfully develop and maintain UN-Water's web based products/channels ensuring a high level of security. 

• Updating websites maintaining a high-level security and drive initiatives to increase traffic.
• Advise on and implement optimal user experience
• Analyze audiences’ needs based on web analytics and adapt response to increase the user experience
• Be the technical focal point for UN-Water’s digital and technical environment;
• Continuously develop frontend and backend to align with strategic needs and operational requests;
• Maintain ongoing development on existing sites and adding new features where needed;
• Keep abreast with new technologies and suggest ways to integrate them to UN-Water’s digital outreach;
• Develop and design as needed interactive websites to serve data, reports, and various documents.
• Ensure the look and feel of the websites are visually appealing (i.e. with attractive mix of texts and graphics), have a unified theme and design, and are easy to navigate (i.e. no more than 3 levels of “drill down” for a user to find desired information)
• Provide search capabilities using key words or phrasing that will identify content from throughout the site
• Ensure the daily operation of the sites and associated applications
• Ensure efficiency of Internet deployment by integrating several third party applications to the Internet
• Ensure the implementation of the Knowledge Management and documentation management solutions
• Advise users of the systems based on their day-to-day needs and ad hoc
• Train client and office users in updating information in web site
• Develop two campaign websites per year: www.worldwaterday.org and www.worldtoiletday.org: Advise on suitable solutions and new technologies and adding new material and features as needed;
• Manage, update and improve site navigation and information architecture;
• Ensure Search Engine Optimization;
• Ensure security – manage all aspects of website security, preventing hacks, defacing, etc;
• Manage backups – data backups weekly, code backups as needed.
• Install software, module/Security patches and upgrades including bug fixes.
• Install, upgrade or modify existing modules on sites.
• Perform other related duties as required.

• Advanced University Degree in communications; computer science, programming or equivalent 
• University Degree (bachelor degree / first level) with a combination of 2 additional years of relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advance university degree.

• Self-motivated and results oriented; 
• Strong organizational and detail oriented skills; 
• Strong skills in HTML, CSS, MySQL, XHTML.
• Solid knowledge and experience with web application frameworks and scripting languages (PHP, JavaScript, ASP)
• Vast experience with WordPress at PHP code level.  (required)
• Knowledge of existing inbuilt WordPress functions  (required)
• Creation of clean, logical, well-documented and re-usable code
• Good understanding of cross-platform and cross-browser issues (required)
• Creation of plugins/widgets written to conform with the WordPress coding standard;(required)
• Visual design sensibility that is clean, simple, and sharp, with ability to edit as needed; (required)
• Systematic, disciplined and analytical approach to problem solving – paying close attention to detail;(required)
