User Interface & Graphic Designer

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is seeking a User Interface & Graphic Designer to join their shared Digital Services (DS) team within the Information Management Branch (IMB). OCHA maintains multiple web-based platforms that are used in humanitarian response. The main objective of this consultancy is to provide UI/Graphic Design support to a variety of projects where DS leads or participates. The role will require in depth conversations with users, collaboration with a wide range of OCHA staff (including developers), and careful negotiation between various project owners.  The position also requires the design of promotional materials; layout and design of research and documents, and visualizations.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about using their skills to help humanitarian response around the world.

Deliverables

• Support the development team to complete the UI/Design aspects of OCHA’s Common Design 2 project. To include finalizing design components and working to implement the design across a variety of OCHA’s sites;

• Annotated wireframing of new or improved solutions (web and mobile) in which DS is engaged;

• Graphical mock-ups of new or improved solutions for DS projects (web and mobile);

• Usability / User Experience review and suggestions for DS projects;

• Graphic design and layout for products and papers created by DS or one of its projects;

• Analytical infographics for DS activities and projects;

• Graphical support, time permitting, to other IMB section or partner teams;

Education

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in graphic design, web design, graphic arts, communications or a related field.

• Secondary education with additional four years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.

Experience 

• A minimum of two years of experience within the relevant and related fields. This experience does not need to be professional/paid experience, but rather relevant work. 

• Experience designing for web (desktop and mobile) including Responsive Web Design;

• Experience working through the design process, from concept to completion, on both new and existing projects;

• Working knowledge and experience of Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign), or their equivalent, is needed;

 Desirable experience (the following experience are optional, candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply)

• Experience (paid or unpaid) in the humanitarian sector would be a very strong asset.

• Experience working on on distributed teams;

• Strong communication and negotiation skills;

• Experience in the application of universal design principles and accessibility best practices;

• Experience designing for sites built in Drupal, WordPress and Vue;

• Knowledge of modern, collaborative design tools (e.g. Figma);

Languages

• A good (intermediate) level of English is required. Knowledge of another UN language (Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese and French) is an asset.

Contract type: Individual Contractual Agreement - ICA retainer modality. A retainer contract is issued for a period of time during which the services of the individual contractor are required intermittently. The individual contractor agreement on retainer basis will specify a “unit price” per day worked. For budgetary purposes, a monetary cap will be determined when the contract is awarded and issued. Please note that the retainer contract will not provide for a minimum, and payment will be made only after completion of work.
