Background Information – The Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF)

The Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF) is a multi-donor fund established in 2021 with the overall aim to effectively address the sanitation, hygiene and menstrual health gap; and raise, catalyse and invest resources to accelerate delivery of sustainable sanitation and hygiene services for people with the highest burden and lowest ability to respond.

The SHF is looking for mission-oriented, collaborative, open minded and flexible candidates who are passionate about global development.

Reporting to the Head of Resource Mobilization and Communication, the role of the Communications Specialist is to lead SHF’s communication, advocacy and public relations efforts. The purpose of the role is to raise public awareness of the impact and value of the SHF in donor and implementing countries. 

 Working with key stakeholders both within and outside the organization, and in concert with resource mobilization efforts, the Communications Specialist develops compelling communications packages and drives visibility among SHF’s key audiences, to influence their decisions and generate their support.  The role also provides public relations support, using innovative content and approaches to drive public support of SHF’s sanitation and hygiene efforts.

1. Communication 

• Under the guidance of the Head of Resource Mobilization and Communication and in consultation with senior managers across the organization, implement SHF’s communication and outreach strategy.

• Advise key stakeholders on presentational issues, including written style, language, formats etc.

• Lead the planning, development and implementation of large, complex communications campaigns work to develop ways to implement campaigns, incorporating the message and themes into all relevant events and products.

• Manage the development of communication materials, ensuring quality of output and relevance to SHF strategy and audiences.

• Conceptualize all publications and communication outputs, including coordinating planning, sequencing and prioritization.

• Oversee SHF’s social media strategy, ensuring quality, timeliness and relevance of the Council’s image on relevant platforms.

• Identify and manage external media and communication contractors ensuring quality, cost effectiveness and timely creation of externally produced work.

• Provide technical support to senior management on communication strategy, policy, methods and tool utilization. 

• Evaluate results and impact of communications activities; providing reporting on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the SHF.

• Build a network with counterpart communication professionals, identifying opportunities to partner with other institutional efforts expanding the reach of SHF.

a. Education

Master degree in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations or a related field.

A bachelor's degree with a combination of two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted  in lieu of the master's degree.

Contract type: Individual Contractor Agreement 
Contract level: International ICA Level 2
Contract duration: Ongoing ICA – ‘Open-ended, subject to organizational requirements, availability of funds and satisfactory performance.’
