Communications Senior Officer - Digital and Content (Retainer)

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners' peace building, humanitarian, and development projects worldwide. Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement, and infrastructure services to various governments, including the Government of South Sudan, donors, and United Nations Organizations. With multiple operations spread across 80 countries, UNOPS offers its partners the logistical, technical, and management knowledge where they need it. By implementing projects for our partners at any given time, the UNOPS South Sudan Country Office significantly contributes to results on the ground, often in the most challenging environments.

Established in 2018, the UNOPS South Sudan Office has been providing services to various partners, including the Government of South Sudan, UN agencies, and other international organizations. The UNOPS South Sudan Office offers services such as infrastructure, procurement, project management, and financial and human resources management.

Position Background:

The Communications Senior Officer - Digital and Content (Retainer) will provide professional photography, videography, and media content creation services covering UNOPS projects. This aims to increase the visibility and awareness of UNOPS and its partners' efforts to create a lasting impact through humanitarian and development projects. The photos and videos should be of professional editorial quality, in line with the UNOPS branding and other applicable guidelines and the regional exposure UNOPS aims for via its website and social media.

The position holder (retainer), should be a South Sudanese national and have a presence/network in South Sudan to perform the services under this Terms of Reference (TOR). The Retainer, will be responsible to make his/her arrangements for travel (including transport) where needed, including insurance coverage and other requirements. The job holder will be responsible for any costs and expenses incurred for the work to be carried out under this TOR.

All materials developed will remain UNOPS's copyright, and UNOPS will be free to adapt and modify them in the future.

• Provide professional photography of different projects. 
• Write descriptive captions for photos, including quotes from people in the photo coverage, to help tell a first-person narrative story.
• Submit a broad range of photographs, including captions and relevant metadata, in line with the UNOPS brand and key advocacy goals, following the terms described in the deliverables below.

• Provide professional videography for different projects. The individual should create the concept and draft script with guidance from UNOPS personnel and agree upon it before embarking on the videography production.
• Record interviews and accompanying b-roll footage to showcase stories from projects. 
• Write scripts for short documentary videos about the process and impact of the projects.
• Once UNOPS approves the scripts, edit the videos to ensure they comply with UNOPS branding and technical guidelines. 
• Provide translations where necessary and English subtitles using professional subtitling practices.
• Submit final high-res videos and all other materials, including the best b-roll, clean copies, and subtitle files, as outlined in UNOPS Photo and Video Technical Submission guidelines.

• A Bachelor’s degree in photography, journalism, fine arts, media studies, or a related field is required.
• Secondary School Education with relevant years of experience may be considered in lieu of a first-level degree.
• A relevant combination of academic credentials and/or industry certifications and qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of university education

• A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience is required with a Bachelor's degree, two (2) years with a Master's degree, six (6) years with a Technical Diploma, and eight (8) years with Secondary School Education in the areas of shooting images in difficult environments, visual storytelling, interviewing subjects, and photographic editing.
• A minimum of three years (3) of experience in photographing conferences, workshops, and individuals is required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in recording, producing, and editing videos is required.
• Three years of experience in developmental projects and conducting interviews in the field is an asset.
• Experience in a UN setting is an asset.

Contract level: Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA 9) / ICSC-9

Contract duration: One (1) year subject to satisfactory performance, availability of funds and necessity of services.

This is a local position open to South Sudanese Nationals.

Terms and Conditions 

• For staff positions only, UNOPS reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a lower level than the advertised level of the post. 

• For retainer contracts, you must complete a few mandatory courses ( they take around 4 hours to complete)  in your own time, before providing services to UNOPS. Refreshers or new mandatory courses may be required during your contract. Please note that you will not receive any compensation for taking courses and refreshers.
