Background Information UNOPS, GPO, Water, Environment, and Climate (WEC) Portfolio
The Water, Environment and Climate (WEC) portfolio, based in Vienna, and with offices based globally is part of the UNOPS Global Portfolios Office. WEC has built strong partnerships and is effectively managing a portfolio of over 500 million USD over the last 15 years to support key initiatives with fund management, project implementation and administrative support.
WEC effectively operationalizes partners' agendas with global approaches, as well as regional and country specific activities focused on climate action, protection and conservation of the environment. Partners profit from WEC’s ability to operationalize and/or scale up their important substantive agendas, including in support of key multilateral environmental and climate agreements, such as the Paris Agreement, the Cartagena Convention as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.
Background on Green Climate Fund (GCF)
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has established the Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme and Project Preparation Facility (RPSP/PPF), to assist developing countries in accessing funding from the GCF for their climate resilient and low emission transformation, and to enhance ownership of the countries’ envisaged low carbon trajectory.
In 2018, GCF selected UNOPS to provide grants management support on their behalf, to Delivery Partners that wish to obtain support from the RPSP/PPF programme. UNOPS is responsible for ensuring that the individual projects are implemented in full compliance with agreed GCF and UNOPS rules and regulations. Finally, UNOPS has a financial and programmatic reporting responsibility defined in the Project Agreement as well as reporting to the GCF-UNOPS Project Board.
As of June 2024, UNOPS is providing Grant Management Services to approximately 270 Readiness and PPF projects globally. UNOPS has established a dedicated project team (GCF Project Team) within WEC based in Vienna and in Copenhagen.
Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Programme Management - Senior Associate, the Intern is expected to provide support to GCF Grants management performing a variety of administrative processes, ensuring high quality and accuracy of work.
