INTERN - Monitoring & Evaluation

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is at the heart of the global movement to improve sanitation and hygiene, so that all people can enjoy healthy and productive lives. Established in 1990, WSSCC is the only United Nations body devoted solely to the sanitation needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized people. WSSCC is embarking on a new strategic plan for 2017-2020. The overriding aim of the plan is to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 6.2 “By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations”

To achieve the goal of ending open defecation and ensuring improved sanitation and hygiene for all, the WSSCC created the Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) in 2008.  The Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) invests in collective behaviour change approaches that enable large numbers of people in developing countries to improve their access to sanitation and adopt good hygiene practices. The GSF is supporting programmes in 13 countries and since 2008 has committed over $112 million to transform lives in developing countries.

GSF is hiring a Monitoring Intern to support with activities related to the GSF monitoring system including the reporting of results and analysis of data coming from the 13 GSF country programmes.    

Under the supervision of the GSF Senior Monitoring Officer, the Intern shall perform the following duties:

• Conduct duties as requested contributing towards the roll out of the new GSF results framework;
• Conduct duties as requested contributing towards the development and testing of an online monitoring and reporting platform;
• Assist with the development and presentation of monitoring tools, templates and guidelines;  
• Assist with the review and analysis of programme results and information;
• Assist with statistical analysis of household survey data and compiling reports and presentations as required;
• Assist with coordination and organisation of internal and external events (webinars, meetings, workshops). Participate at meetings and events, as required.
• Perform other duties as required by the Senior Monitoring Officer.

Candidates must be either currently enrolled in undergraduate or a Master’s or PhD course in a relevant field (e.g. social science, statistics, development, demography, etc.), or have graduated within the past three years prior to the application date of the internship.   

• Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) development sector.
• Monitoring and evaluation of programmes in the development field.
• Statistical analysis with experience of analysing household survey data.

Fluency in oral and written English and French is required. 

• Proven ability to conduct independent research and analysis, identify issues, and recommend solutions. Familiarity with UN and UNOPS rules, regulations and policies. Ability to work systematically, accurately and under pressure.
• Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan and those under his/her supervision.
