UNOPS Sri
Lanka
The UNOPS Office for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh,
Maldives and Bhutan operates under the UNOPS Asia Regional Office. While the
office provides technical, operational and administrative support to the four
countries under its direct supervision, it also provides support services to
other UNOPS country offices as required. UNOPS work in this region focuses on
the construction and operation of high quality sustainable infrastructure and
sustainable procurement, project management, timely provision of services, and
the use of most relevant technologies. Such projects provide social and
economic benefits to vulnerable populations across the country, and contribute
to poverty eradication. This includes construction of schools, hospitals, water
networks, urban sewerage and drainage facilities, harbours and anchorages,
waste management facilities, climate change mitigation, as well as a range of
“soft” support aiming at anchoring the concepts of Disaster Risk Reduction for
Resilience (DRR4R) and Build Back Better in government systems and capacities,
as well as strengthening the overall sustainability of public infrastructure
through robust operations and maintenance structures, local governance, etc.
Globally, UNOPS is putting a strong
focus on sustainability. This is translated in UNOPS Strategic Framework
through the strengthening of key contribution goals such as Sustainable
Infrastructure and Sustainable Procurement, taking into consideration cross
cutting dimensions of national capacity building, social, economic and
environmental sustainability. Within rapidly evolving local and international
contexts, increasing national capacities and shifting needs identified in the
region, UNOPS is steering its intervention strategy towards an agenda focusing
on environmental issues, climate change, resilient infrastructure, and disaster
risk reduction.
UNOPS operates within the overall
framework of the UN Sustainable Development Frameworks in the above mentioned
countries, and has developed a number of partnerships over the years, with
governments, other UN agencies, donor agencies and the private sector. In Sri
Lanka and the Maldives, UNOPS is leading several innovative initiatives on
Climate change, water security and waste management; In Bangladesh, UNOPS is
working on organizational capacity building and sustainable and resilient
infrastructure.
