Surveyor

The European Union and UNOPS have signed a contribution agreement for the implementation of the project entitled Zonal Efforts for Agricultural Transformation – Bahr el-Ghazal Agricultural Development (ZEAT BEAD) “Feeder Road Construction in support of Trade and Market development in South Sudan”. The project focuses on the construction and maintenance of approximately 120km of feeder roads in Lakes, Warrap, Northern and Western Bahr el-Ghazal States of the Republic of South Sudan. The project will also incorporate the implementation of a maintenance and capacity building program with the State Ministries of Physical Infrastructure and local contractors, as well as community engagement and labor intensive support activities. The objective of the project is to improve rural livelihoods by providing sustainable access to agricultural markets using appropriately engineered infrastructural approaches.

Under the direct supervision of the site manager and the overall supervision of the Project Manager, the Surveyor is responsible for the preliminary technical work on a project site and conducting quantity surveys pre, during and after construction.

• Check and verify all benchmarks and principal setting out points to be used in the setting out of the works;
• Check and verify the setting out of the works by contractor;
• Carry out all necessary surveys for the calculation of the quantities of the completed works and proper handling of the survey data submitted by the contractor;
• Check and verify that the alignments and levels of the works are in line with the design;
• Bring to the immediate attention of the Site Manager / Team Leader any issues or matters that may adversely affect the quality, time and / or economic performance of the works;
• Conducting an engineering survey for the selected road, structures and civil works, including a Topographic survey and recording all site related details;
• Responsible to ensure surveying equipment is in good working order;
• Report on all matters pertinent to his duties to the site manager;
• Maintain day-to-day survey records with appropriate format developed;
• Perform any other duties as requested by the Site manager/Team Leader.

Monitoring and Progress Controls

• Ability and commitment to exercise task assigned by the Site Manager/Team Leader;
• Document and report recorded survey data;
• Weekly meeting with the Team leader reporting the progress of work;
• Ad-hoc and regular communication with the Site Manger and Team leader regarding work plan and activities;
• Timely and accurate submission of final surveying report of project sites.

Final Product

• Requested tasks are delivered in a timely, efficient manner and according to UNOPS procedures to meet project requirements;
• From time to time develop personal capacity to independently undertake relevant tasks assigned by the Site Manager and the Team Leader.

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying Engineering required;
• Secondary Diploma with additional 4 years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the Bachelor’s Degree requirement;
• Relevant certificates or training related to survey a distinct advantage.

Work Experience

• Minimum  2 years’ experience within the Engineering surveying of road construction works required;
• Experience as a quantity surveyor in roads construction project desired;
• Proven capability of the use of Total station including recording data, preparation of survey reports an asset;
• Experience in drafting using AutoCAD, and Quantity Surveying is added advantage;
• Previous work experience in similar development stage and working conditions as in South Sudan will be an advantage.

Language

• Fluency in written and oral English is required;
• Knowledge of Arabic language desired.
