Background information - Stop TB
UNOPS hosts the Stop
Tuberculosis Partnership Secretariat (STBP) as of 1 January 2015, in
Geneva, Switzerland. The vision of the Stop TB Partnership is to realize the
goal of elimination of Tuberculosis (TB) as a public health problem and,
ultimately, to obtain a world free of TB by ensuring that every TB patient has
access to effective diagnosis, treatment and cure; stopping transmission of TB;
reducing the inequitable social and economic toll of TB; and developing and
implementing new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic tools and strategies.
The Stop Partnership is uniquely positioned to support the development and
further implementation by partners of the current and future Global Plan,
acting as a coordinator and catalyst for the range of partners engaged in the
fight against TB.
Founded in 2001, the
Stop TB Partnership's mission is to serve every person who is vulnerable to TB
and ensure that high-quality treatment is available to all who need it. Our
partners include international and technical organizations, government
programmes, research and funding agencies, foundations, NGOs, civil society and
community groups and the private sector.
STBP’s vision is to end TB by 2030 by ensuring that every patient has
access to effective diagnosis, treatment and cure; stopping the transmission of
TB; and reducing the inequitable social and economic toll of TB. The
organization has three strategic goals, which include:
- Advocate,
catalyze, and facilitate sustained collaboration and coordination amongst
a broad spectrum of key partners, including civil society, communities,
and the private sector, in order to achieve the targets set forth in the
Global Plan to End TB, 2016-2020: The Paradigm Shift and End TB Strategy;
- Support the
development, replication, and scale-up of innovative approaches to
overcome systemic barriers in the fight against TB; and
- Facilitate
world-wide, equitable access to TB medicines and diagnostics, including
new tools, across public and private sectors.
In order to achieve
the targets set forth in the Global Plan to End TB, 2016-2020: The Paradigm
Shift and End TB Strategy, substantial innovation will be required across the
entire TB ecosystem. This is a formidable task for a disease area that has
typically seen very little progress.
STBP has expanded its breadth and scope by creating a new team (e.g,
SIIF) tasked with the development of groundbreaking initiatives and projects to
catalyze entrepreneurial mindset and innovation in the TB and global health
space (e.g., anti-microbial resistance).
Two such initiatives include:
- A
“synthetic” venture capital mechanism, to drive roll-out of new products and
technologies in the TB and global health space and
- An innovative financing mechanism in a high burden country to
accelerate the decline of TB and MDR-TB and catalyze financial sustainability.
