The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the
leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental
agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of
sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an
authoritative advocate for the global environment.
Within this remit, UN Environment, through its Post-Conflict and
Disaster Management Branch in the Policy and Programme Division and in
partnership with the UN Office for Project Services, acts in the role of an
in-house technical assistance (TA) team that provides expertise to UN agencies
in planning, designing, financing and implementing a range of actions to reduce
their environmental footprint across a range of technical areas.
UN Environment, through various
projects is installing such systems in
field locations remote locations, predominantly least
developed countries and within UN agencies such as Peacekeeping. It is anticipated
that digital data will be gathered from thousands of sites in up to 40 countries.
Two-way communication is also anticipated in a subset of those sites. The point
sources of the data are an array of electrical engineering equipment such as
diesel generators, inverters and low voltage and medium voltage smart meters,
weather stations and portable data loggers.
Pilots to establish the digital communications technology, systems
and standards to be adopted are to be designed, procured and installed in Q2-Q4
2018 and monitored thereafter.
Thereafter the work will evolve into three work streams:
- Development of system level support, such as standard online
interfaces and data management plans for projects, sites and multi-country
clients.
- Installation of diagnostic equipment and dataloggers at multiple
sites to inform project baseline and feasibility studies
- Design, planning and implementation oversight of the digital
communications components of multiple projects.
