UNOPS hosts the Stop Tuberculosis Partnership (STBP) Secretariat as of 1 January 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland. The vision of the STBP is to realize the goal of elimination of Tuberculosis (TB) as a public health problem and, ultimately, to obtain a world free of TB by ensuring that every TB patient has access to effective diagnosis, treatment and cure; stopping transmission of TB; reducing the inequitable social and economic toll of TB; and developing and implementing new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic tools and strategies. The STBP is uniquely positioned to support the development and further implementation by partners of the current and future Global Plan, acting as a coordinator and catalyst for the range of partners engaged in the fight against TB.

TB remains an important public health threat in Tajikistan. While the burden of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) is high in the country, treatment of DR-TB cases using new WHO-recommended drugs and treatment regimens is implemented in pilot districts, and it is planned to achieve full countrywide coverage by the end of 2019. Reliability of TB laboratory diagnostic network is crucial for successful scaleup of new effective treatments. Currently, the key problems in the network include the lack of coordination at different levels, suboptimal management of the National Reference Laboratory (NRL), high turnover of laboratory staff, unreliable specimen referral system and weak quality management system.

In consultation with the National TB Program and with funding and technical support from USAID, the Stop TB Partnership will employ an in-country Laboratory Specialist in Tajikistan.
