Content Tier One Support & Graphic Design (including UI)

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is seeking a Tier One Content Support and Graphic Designer to join their shared Digital Services Section (DSS) within the Information Management Branch (IMB). OCHA maintains multiple web-based platforms that are used in humanitarian response. The main objectives of this consultancy are to provide tier one support to site editors and users as part of a distributed content support team; and to provide Graphic Design support, including website user interface designs, to a variety of projects where DSS leads or participates. The role will require interaction with and sometimes in depth conversations with users as well as collaboration with a wide range of OCHA staff (including developers).  The position requires the layout and design of training and promotional materials; user manuals; tutorials; good practice guidelines; research reports; and visualizations.

Deliverables

●        Provide Tier-one content and technical support, as part of geographically distributed team, to a variety of OCHA-managed websites including, but not limited to CERF, Digital Situation Report, HumanitarianResponse.info, Humanitarian ID, and ReliefWeb;

●        Provide ad hoc training to site owners and editors;

●        Analytical infographics for DSS activities and projects;

●        Graphic design and layout for products and papers created by DSS or one of its projects;

●        Support the development team, in regards to UI/Design aspects of OCHA’s Common Design project;

●        Annotated wireframing of new or improved solutions (web and mobile) in which DSS is engaged;

●        Graphical mock-ups, within OCHA defined standards and the Common Design, for new or improved DSS managed/projects;

●        Usability Interface review and suggestions for DSS projects;

Education 

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in graphic design, web design, graphic arts, communications, marketing or a related field.

• A minimum of  (2) two years of experience within the relevant and related fields;
• Experience providing Tier One support as part of a geographically distributed team;
• Experience providing training and support to website editors;
• Experience designing infographics and graphic design & layout for publications;
• Experience designing for web;
• Experience working through the design process, from concept to completion, on both new and existing projects;
• Working knowledge and experience of Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign), or their equivalent, is needed;
• Experience working with modern collaboration tools such as Trello, JIRA, Google Docs, O365, etc.

Desirable experience (the following experience are optional, candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply)

•  Experience in the humanitarian sector would be a very strong asset.
•  Experience working on on distributed teams;
•  Strong communication and negotiation skills;
•  Experience in the application of universal design principles and accessibility best practices;
•  Experience designing for websites built in modern Content Management Systems such as Drupal and WordPress;

Languages

• Fluency in English is required. 
• Working knowledge of French would be a major asset. 
• Knowledge of another UN language (Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Chinese) is an asset.

Contract type: Individual Contractual Agreement - ICA retainer modality. A retainer contract is issued for a period of time during which the services of the individual contractor are required intermittently. The individual contractor agreement on retainer basis will specify a “unit price” per day worked. For budgetary purposes, a monetary cap will be determined when the contract is awarded and issued. Please note that the retainer contract will not provide for a minimum, and payment will be made only after completion of work.
