Background: UNMAS 

United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is a division of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPKO). UNMAS is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly (RES/68/72) to ensure an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problem posed by a wide range of explosive hazards. Legislative mandates also recognize UNMAS technical expertise in responding to threats posed by unsecured and unsafe conventional weapons and ammunition stockpiles. As an office within DPKO, UNMAS supports peacekeeping and special political missions in accordance with Security Council mandates.

The Operations Associate - Rik Education will work under the overall supervision of the Programme Manager. 

The duties and responsibilities are as follows:

• Assist in planning and design of RE activities including public risk awareness campaigns, and community-based RE.

• Assist in selection and training of RE facilitators who will deliver risk education sessions in communities.

• Assist in developing a training kit including materials for the use of RE facilitators during RE sessions.

• Assist in liaising with concerned partners and authorities in RE planning.

• Participate in provision of Explosive Hazard Risk Awareness (RA) guidance and training to humanitarian personnel.

• Participate in mapping of existing RE capacity and activities and materials, and identifying gaps and opportunities.

• Assist in developing new initiatives relevant to RE, including design of materials in cooperation with partners.

• Assist in the evaluation of RA and RE tools and methodologies.

• Receive and analyze activity reports from implementing partners, and maintain records of data and progress of work, and produce reports as required.

• Keep an inventory about RE materials.

• Participate in Monitoring and Evaluation and Quality Assurance of risk education activities conducted by implementing partners, including field visits to targeted areas.

• Assist in interpretation and translation when necessary. 

Education

• High School Diploma with a minimum of six (6) years relevant experience OR;

• A First-level University degree (Bachelors or equivalent) in Education, Social Work, or other related fields with Two (2) years relevant experience is required;

Experience

• Relevant experience is defined as experience in risk education; 

• Experience in mine action or operations is desired;

• Experience in community-based education, public information communications, training development or capacity building is desired;

• Gender mainstreaming experience is desired;

• Knowledge of the UN system and UNOPS procedures is desired.

Language

• Fluency in English (writing, speaking and reading) is required;

• Fluency in Arabic  (writing, speaking and reading) is required;
