Structural Engineer - Retainer

UNOPS -Somalia Country Office (SOCO) is recruiting this position through an Emergency Recruitment process (EPP).

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to help shape UNOPS’ efforts to support the expansion of affordable, accountable and effective policing in Somalia.

Purpose and Scope of Assignment 

• Review the architectural drawings to ensure suitability for the proposed operational use, optimal designs in terms of suitability for Somalia context; 
• Analysis and carrying out structural designs for the proposed buildings and supporting infrastructure including the foundation system and in accordance with the adopted design standards;
• Develop structural design drawings in compliance with UNOPS design standards / manuals, supported with design specifications and documentations to support UNOPS design review;
• Available to support the team members with structural engineering input to the quantities and estimation sheets preparation;
• Assist the client to respond to bidder inquiries related to structural elements of the design and provide clarification to the client on as requested basis during bid evaluation process;
• Available to carry out revisions to the structural elements upon client request during works implementation and to coordinate the necessary approvals;
• Archive files for all design documentation, memos and instructions in correct format  and in line with UNOPS archiving procedures
• Participate in project team meetings, knowledge sharing sessions and site visits (if requested).

Impact of results 

The effective and successful performance of the Structural Engineer in the delivery of the building rehabilitation tasks will contribute to the success of the project and will promote the image and credibility of the UNOPS as an effective service provider to the Federal Government of Somalia. 

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering or relevant related field is required. 
• Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering or relevant related field
  is an asset but not required.

• Minimum of two (2) years experience in structural engineering related to buildings designs is required.
• Familiarity with design standards and manuals used in East Africa is an asset.
• At least two (2) year experience and skills in using AutoCAD is required
• Experience/knowledge of Google Suite products, especially google forms, sheets, docs and slides is an asset.

• Fluency in written and oral English is required.

UNOPS Somalia Country Office (SOCO) has had a solid and continuous in-country expert presence successfully implementing programs since the mid-1990s, where it is currently undertaking various projects and initiatives in close collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), Federal Member States (FMS) and partners from the global donor community.
