Background Information - UNOPS Kenya Multi Country Office

In East and Southern Africa, UNOPS is represented by a Multi Country Office based in Nairobi, Kenya and operating across 16 countries. The portfolio of engagements managed by the Kenya Multi Country Office includes transactional projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies, UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple infrastructure, procurement, fund management, and HR management projects in Zimbabwe, Somalia, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and several island states. In 2023 a country presence will be established in Malawi in order to implement and oversee the new education sector project and build a pipeline of future projects.

UNOPS manages a range of infrastructure projects in Zimbabwe in different sectors including education, health, agriculture, and transport applying different implementation approaches such as labor-based and outsourced designers/contractors but always with direct supervision from UNOPS. 

The Post Cyclone Idai and Recovery Emergency Project (PCIREP) which was funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Implemented by UNOPS in conjunction with several Zimbabwe Government ministries in now in its defects notification period (DNP). During the same period, there will be a need to attend to any snags remaining to be finished as well a need to constantly monitor the physical infrastructure assets that were constructed/repaired during the project life span. This entails conducting several scheduled visits to the project sites in Chipinge and Chimanimani to inspect the infrastructure for any possible defects that might need attention and then arrange for remedial action as needed. 

Under the overall supervision of the DNP Project Manager and direct supervision of the Associate Engineer, the Construction Engineering Technician - Assistant is expected to support the implementation of the project activities through the provision of technical expertise and the application of best practices in the project implementation.

The Construction Engineering Technician - Assistant, who is expected to be working in the Project Site office, will assist the Associate Civil Engineer to oversee implementation of contracted works in conforming to the technical specifications of UNOPS. Any situation that may require decision making which will involve changes in the designs and plan will be brought to the notice of the DNP  Manager with details of issues encountered at site and appropriate recommendations.
