The Structural Engineer will report to the Infra Team Lead and will be responsible for the following duties
i) Technical Study and Design Development
- Liaise with other designers, including architects, to agree on safe designs and their compatibility with the aesthetic concept of the construction.
- Plan, design, and develop building structures and facilities; prepare calculations, models, charts, and graphs; and create construction drawings and design specifications, including the use of computers and computer-aided design (CAD) technology for simulation purposes.
- Analyze the configurations of the basic structural components of buildings and civil structures; calculate the pressures, stresses, and strains that each component will experience; and consider the strength of various materials (e.g., timber, concrete, steel, and brick) for structural design.
- Prepare structural design reports, structural drawings, technical specifications, and bills of quantities for structural and related civil works.
- Provide a high level of technical sufficiency within UNOPS ETMCO, including the identification and promotion of innovative and practical design solutions.
- Assume technical responsibility for the preparation of quality plans, scheme programs, assessments, design work, estimates, bills of quantities, and the review of bid documentation and assessments.
- Promote the use of, and participate in the development of, UNOPS design and production standards, working with country code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception to building codes is required.
- Assess the requirements of new or potential projects, break them into tasks, and work with the Proposal Owner to determine scope of work, budget, and staffing, including writing the scope of work for design based on preliminary review and meetings with potential partners and/or donors.
- Provide input and documentation for internal, organizational, partner, and stakeholder reports.
- Review and update technical standards, office procedures, construction techniques, and the use of materials to ensure that specifications and schemes prepared by UNOPS Sudan reflect best practices, with continuous improvement, including training for UNOPS engineers.
- Examine structures at risk of collapse and advise on how to improve their structural integrity, such as recommending the removal or repair of defective parts or rebuilding the entire structure.
- Oversee third parties undertaking investigations for UNOPS ETMCO and collaborate with geotechnical engineers to investigate ground conditions and analyze results of soil samples and in-situ tests.
ii) Procurement
- Support in the preparation of bidding documents for infrastructure-related projects as per the UNOPS Procurement Manual.
- Support the procurement team in pre-bid meetings and provide the necessary clarifications to bidders.
- Support technical and financial evaluations of contractors/suppliers according to the Procurement Manual.
iii) Supervision & Monitoring
- Monitor and inspect off-site and on-site work for compliance with applicable codes, accepted engineering practices, and Ethiopian Standards.
- Assist the Project Manager in the planning, organization, and oversight of site investigations, surveys, and analyses of existing buildings, feasibility studies, structural inspections, assessments, and the preparation of associated reports.
- Support the Infrastructure Team and review the undertaken measurement of site works in support of contractor payment requests.
- Support the Infrastructure Team and review to ensure the strict implementation of quality control standards and procedures on the sites, reporting regularly to the supervisor.
iv) Knowledge Sharing
- Support training and technology transfer to national personnel and contractor personnel and advise on good construction practices, good environmental management practices, and appropriate health and safety standards during the design development and implementation stages.
- Contribute to the dissemination and sharing of best practices and lessons learned for development planning and knowledge building.
Impacts of Results
Improved efficiency in the delivery of infrastructure projects, high-quality design drawings and reporting, and improved staff capacity.
