Provision of Geospatial and Analytical Support Services for UN Hurricane Beryl Reconstruction Support in Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The UNOPS Peace and Security Cluster (PSC) is supporting the emergency response and reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Beryl in Grenada, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines through the provision of geospatial and analytical support services. This project aims to enhance the operational efficiency of UN emergency response teams by leveraging advanced GIS, remote sensing, and data analytics to assess damage, quantify debris, and inform recovery planning.
The project is led by the Information Management and Analytics Team (IMAT) within PSC, which specializes in using high-resolution satellite imagery, AI-driven geospatial analysis, and 3D modeling to provide critical insights for decision-making in post-disaster environments. These analytical outputs will help UN agencies, national authorities, and humanitarian actors prioritize response efforts and allocate resources effectively.
Key Project Components:
- Pre-event Building Footprint Data – AI-based segmentation and modeling to establish baseline data for damage assessment.
- Damage Assessment & Labeling – Use of very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for detecting structural damage.
- Rubble Volume Estimation – 3D modeling and volumetric calculations to assess debris clearance needs.
- Findings and Recommendations – Synthesis of analytical outputs to guide response and reconstruction.
- Capacity Building & Stakeholder Engagement – Providing tools, training, and support to national and UN stakeholders for effective use of analytical outputs.
A key component of this initiative is the development of a digital tool to present key findings, outputs, and analysis in an accessible and interactive format. The tool will enhance data-driven decision-making by integrating geospatial datasets, 3D models, and analytical reports into a unified interface. This internship role will support the design, development, and user adoption of this tool, ensuring that the outputs of the project are effectively communicated and leveraged for impact.
