The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for cities and human settlements. UN-Habitat’s humanitarian work is guided by its Strategic Policy on Human Settlements in Crisis and the agency is a member of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC). At the core of UN- Habitat’s work is UN-Habitat People’s Process and New Urban Agenda, which places participatory urban analysis, and planning as a central pillar of humanitarian response, recovery, and the rehabilitation of conflict-affected cities.
UN-Habitat’s Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) manages UN-Habitat’s project portfolio in the Arab States. It ensures that country priorities are in alignment with the UN-Habitat’s organizational policies and strategic objectives and brings through its Regional Representative to the attention of the Executive Management Committee (EMC) opportunities and challenges in the region, allowing for timely feedback and responses to urgent demands and requests from Member States.
UN-Habitat has been operational in Jordan since 2005, cooperating with regional and international organizations, local authorities, civil society organizations and private sector, to promote the implementation of UN-Habitat global programmes in the country including adequate housing and sustainable cities. Since July 2013, UN- Habitat Jordan office has been transitioning into a programme-oriented office engaging in activities with other UN agencies to support the Government of Jordan nationally and locally in addressing impacts of the Syrian Crisis and refugees in host communities and better manage the accelerating urban sprawl and improve the preparedness to mitigate the detrimental impacts of climate change on the fragile physical, socio-economic, and environmental aspects of urban areas. UN-Habitat programmes in Jordan include basic services, public spaces, climate change and urban resilience. Operations include the geographic areas of Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, Mafraq, Ghor Al Safi and most recently, Al Salt. Moreover, UN-Habitat has established close collaboration with national government as well as local level authorities, which is essential to successfully implement programs in Jordan.
The incumbent will report to the Progamme Managers and the Head of UN-Habitat Programme in Jordan, UN-Habitat-Jordan, and will be based at the Amman duty station. The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Associate will work closely with the UN-Habitat team to support the implementation projects in Jordan and the region in close coordination with project partners and executing entities.
