OCHA is the part of the United
Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to
ensure a coherent response to humanitarian emergencies. Information management is one of the pillars of
pre- and post-disaster coordination, and OCHA’s Field Information Services
Section (FIS) works to make information management a predictable and reliable
element of response operations. FIS helps OCHA field offices to maintain ‘common
operational datasets’ (CODs), essential baseline data used across the humanitarian
community to develop a common operational picture and coordinate their
activities.
In 2017 we'll be making a major effort to improve the quality
and availability of CODs, confronting technical, social and political
challenges related to data in many different contexts around the world. The
project will significantly improve the effectiveness of humanitarian programs,
especially in sudden-onset disasters, as most humanitarian analysis and
information products ultimately rely on accurate CODs..
OCHA
is looking for a talented, creative, and dedicated
GIS individual to work closely with colleagues around the world to develop and
maintain these essential datasets.
The successful candidate will have advanced skills in GIS; enjoy meticulous and detail-oriented data work; relish both
technical and non-technical data-related challenges; be a creative problem
solver; actively listen to colleagues and partners facing data challenges; establish
comprehensive processes and documentation; communicate clearly; explain data
and GIS concepts to non-technical people; work both in person and remotely in
sometime chaotic environments; and delight in providing support to colleagues
around the world.
