Background Information - East Africa Hub (EAH)

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the East Africa Hub manages a growing portfolio of engagements, including associated strategic and operational risks. The East Africa sub-region currently consists of an established Operation Centre in South Sudan and a portfolio of engagements managed by the Kenya based East Africa Hub office. This includes primarily transactional projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies, UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple ‘operational’ projects in Somalia, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and several island states.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

The objective of this Nairobi-based consultancy is to implement a global campaign on marine litter that addresses the millions of tonnes of plastic that enter the millions of tonnes of plastic that enter the ocean.

Result of Service: To launch and implement a global campaign of marine litter, focusing on raising awareness and behavior change.

1. Implementation of campaign strategy with the Communication Division and relevant substantive divisions:

• Delivery: Work to deliver the Marine Litter campaign and capitalize on opportunities throughout 2017, such as the Ocean Summit (June, 2017)  to ensure successful delivery of the first phase of the campaign.
• Planning: Support the planning and monitoring of the campaign, ensuring the budget is on track, key milestones are being met and proactive and reactive opportunities are being taken to deliver the messages of the campaign and meet  key performance indicators.
• Coordination: Ensure effective intra-divisional (across Communication Division teams) and inter-divisional communication, planning, reporting, and action on the campaign.

2. Coordinate the implementation of the campaign, which will include:

• Brand Materials: Work with colleagues to ensure the development of brand identity, logo, tagline, images and visual assets / tonal approach to inspire engagement is delivered per the specifications and timeline for events.
• Communication materials: Work with colleagues to ensure the digital, social and media materials and products required are delivered per the strategy of the campaign and share with key individuals / organisations to take the campaign out into the world.
• Other materials: When required, coordinate and work with colleagues to produce promotional materials for campaigns: brochures, flyers, booklets, banners that would explain the purpose of the campaign.
• Produce editorial content as required, including blogs, press releases, speeches and fact sheets.

3.     Partnership and Events:

• Secure partners for outreach and publicity opportunities that would amplify the campaign
• Coordinate the delivery of materials for events for the campaign including World Oceans Day and other major Ocean events each year.

4. Resource Mobilization

• Develop a resource mobilization plan that would secure funding for the campaign so that it could be sustained over a 5-year period. Coordinate implementation of the plan.

5.     Budget and evaluation:

• Measure & evaluate with learning and real-time insight on performance.
• Support Chief of Public Advocacy and Communication to have oversight of budget and ensure key metrics set in the campaign are being met.
•  Prepare financial reports and progress reports.

6.     Other tasks:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in in communication or related field required.

• Minimum  seven years of experience in communication/event organizing.

• Fluency in English is required
