UNOPS mission is to expand the capacity of the UN system
and its partners to implement peacebuilding, humanitarian and development
operations that matter for people in need.
Working in some of the world’s most challenging environments, UNOPS
vision is to always satisfy partners with management services that meet
world-class standards of quality, speed and cost effectiveness.
The United Nations Human
Settlements Programme, UN Habitat, is the United Nations agency for cities and
human settlements. UN-Habitat’s humanitarian work is guided by its Strategic
Policy on Human Settlements in Crisis and the agency is a member of the
Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC).
UN Habitat’s Syria
Programme focuses on the following areas:
emergency shelter and housing, cadastral affairs, water, sanitation and
hygiene (WASH), solid waste management, urban infrastructure rehabilitation,
open spaces/cultural heritage and municipal support. UN-Habitat has been integrating
these sectors into an area-based approach.
This includes several components: (i) a multi-sector approach to needs;
(ii) interventions that address the needs of individual households as well as
communities and local authorities; (iii) interventions at different scales from
streets to city and regional levels; (iv) encouraging parallel, coordinated
projects implemented by partners. UN-Habitat works closely with UN agencies, local
authorities, NGOs and the private sector to implement its programme.
One
Human Settlements Officer (HSO) – Shelter and Settlements - will be recruited
to support the design and delivery of its programme. The HSO is expected to display strong
competencies in shelter/housing within an area-based approach. In addition, the duties of the position require
strong partner liaison and coordination capabilites. As required, the position may also involve
some technical representation of UN-Habitat Syria in technical coordination
fora.
