Programme Analyst – Training Programme

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic public-private partnership between UNEP and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with over 200 financial institutions, signatories to UNEP Statement of Commitment by Financial Institutions on Sustainable Development, and a range of partners and organizations, to embed environmental, social and governance considerations in financial decision-making. Through its training programme, UNEP FI promotes the adoption of sustainability practices by financial institutions and the finance sector at large and builds capacity.

UNEP FI’s sustainable finance training services are part of its effort to carry out the mission to "identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations”. The primary aim of these services is to raise awareness and to build capacity in sustainable finance amongst UNEP FI members and other financial institutions, as well as relevant stakeholders in governments, NGOs and Academia, especially in developing countries and emerging markets. In particular UNEP FI requires a consultant to work on its activities in the Training Department. UNEP FI undertakes the following training:

Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) Training Programme

The ESRA Training Programme (Online & in-person Training Workshops) seeks to train financial analysts on how to identify, analyse and manage environmental and social risks associated with their clients’ projects in order to integrate E&S risk management in their day to day lending and investment processes and decision-making.

Climate Change: Risks and Opportunities for the Finance Sector Training Programme

The aim of the Climate Change Training Programme (Online & in-person Training Workshops) is to equip representatives of financial institutions, including banks, insurers, and fund managers, as well as other stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and skills to address climate change risks and capitalise on its opportunities.

Corporate Eco-Efficiency in Financial Institutions

The Online Course on Corporate Eco-Efficiency in Financial Institutions (CEFI) seeks to train representatives of the financial sector on how to make efficient use of the resources involved in the daily internal operations of financial institutions (FIs) and thus reduce their environmental footprint

Green Bonds Training Programme

The Green Bonds Training Workshops promote the development of a greener and more inclusive growth in the countries where these take place. The workshops are aimed at potential green bond investors, issuers and verifiers/second-party opinion providers.

Responsible Investment Training Programme

This Training Programme seeks to train institutional investors on how to integrate environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) aspects in their investment processes.

Sustainable Finance Training Programme

UNEP FI currently does not have the expertise in-house to undertake the below mentioned tasks, therefore it requires the assistance of a consultant.

The consultant will support UNEP FI’s training programme, in co-operation with UNEP FI thematic and industry committee leads and regional coordinators, UNEP FI partners and contractors, as well as relevant governance bodies. The role includes raising awareness of the training programme to build capacity on sustainable finance amongst UNEP FI members and other financial institutions worldwide, especially in developing countries and emerging markets.

Delivering and expanding these services will be an integral part of implementing UNEP FI’s work plan under UNEP´s Project 62-P2 indicated below (section 1.4). This reflects the legislative authority of UNEP’s Governing Council, 19th Session (GC19/34) & UNEA Decision 2/5 on “Delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” and UNEA Decision 2/9 “Environmental Stability in the context of Sustainable Development”.  

Specifically the Consultant will perform the following tasks:

Development and delivery of the UNEP FI’s Training Programme

Assist in the development and delivery of new courses (in several languages), and development of new case studies for existing courses.

Promote UNEP FI’s Training Programme

Communications to raise awareness of training opportunities among financial institutions worldwide.

Support the delivery of online and in-person courses

Co-ordinate update of Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) course materials

The consultant will also assist in co-ordinating an update of the course content and relaunching the flagship ESRA training programme. The final result of the consultant’s work will be the successful development and implementation the revised training programme in 2019.

Training strategy development

Provide inputs into training strategy.

Development and delivery of the UNEP FI’s Training Programme

• Assist in the development of the Climate Change Course (focused on banks) in additional languages (Spanish & Portuguese), and in the delivery in those languages.
• Assist in the development of the Climate Change Course focused on investors and insurers.
• Assist in the development of new case studies for the Training Programme.
• Assist in the delivery of the pilot ESRA Training Programme in Chinese.

Promote UNEP FI’s Training Programme

• Assist in building networks with finance-related academic institutions and potential training delivery partners in order to promote UNEP FI training activities and to adapt, coordinate and deliver them, focusing on Latin America, North America, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.
• Liaise closely with the Training Assistants, who undertake administrative activities, such as contacting financial institutions and partner organizations to secure participants for courses, registering participants, handling payment of course fees and responding to day-to-day enquiries and expressions of interest about the Programmes / courses.
• Maintain participation reporting on training activities and report quarterly and annually on all aspects of the training courses.
• Assist in the development of “train the trainer” services to increase capacity building.
• Assist with the coordination of the pool of tutors (around 15 worldwide) and who undertake the following work: delivery of courses and in-person workshops, development and update of course materials, adaptation of the course materials to local contexts, translation of materials into other languages, etc.
• Assist with the expansion and the coordination of the Training Programme Partners and keep them informed about the trainings held (i.e. reporting course/Programme results) and about the development of the training materials.
• Assist with the expansion of training partnerships.
• Assist to identify and develop opportunities to scale up and enhance training delivery.

• Co-ordinate with communications teams to develop and disseminate promotional materials.

Coordinate with regional network coordinators to support outreach to course participants for potential new members and engagement in events and to support training delivery across regions.

Co-ordinate the delivery of online and in-person courses

• Deliver 6 online ESRA trainings
• Deliver 1 Climate Change online course.
• Assist the Secretariat with planning the required Budget and resourcing for activities.

Co-ordinate update of Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) course materials

• Clear and agreed-on (between Secretariat) implementation plan, project timeline, communications schedule, as well as the concept and description of deliverables
• All communications and interactions take place in accordance with pre-determined objectives
• Transparent and thorough process undertaken to ensure quality and relevance of updated materials.
• Project deliverables are delivered in line with their agreed-on description, budget and timeline
• Communications materials are developed and distributed. in co-ordination with UNEP FI communications team.

Training strategy development

• Training strategy reviewed.

• Advanced university degree (master degree or equivalent) in economics, finance, business administration or related field with 2 years of relevant experience; Or
• First level university degree (bachelor  or equivalent) in economics, finance, business administration or related field with 4 years of relevant experience.

Work Experience

• At least 2 years of relevant experience in project administration, sustainable development, training, or related field is required.
• Experience in sustainable finance and marketing/promotion is also required. 
• Knowledge and work experience at the international level in particular with the UN system is an asset.
